Athens (Not Georgia)

CIMG1483We’ve arrived safe and sound in Athens and so far our tour company, while definitely European (“oh, someone will come pick you up, probably”) has not let us down yet. Our driver met us at the airport, our hotel is clean and comfy, and today’s city tour and lunch were quite nice. Athens is an interesting city… very dense and filled with hustle and bustle. There are more batshit-crazy drivers and motorcyclists here than I’ve ever seen, though Sasha assures me it’s nothing compared to Southeast asia and I believe him. Oh, and it’s hot as hell here.

Yeah man, but it’s a dry heat.

CIMG1450Anyways, last night we walked around the very touristy area called Plaka, where they have lots of small shops and tourist trap bistros. We ate dinner at one and then had a beer at the hotel bar, which is actually pretty awesome; it’s on the roof of the hotel and has a great view of the whole city and the lit up acropolis (interesting side note: the tallest skyscraper in Athens, nicknamed “the Athens tower”, is only 24 floors high; the lack of tall buildings really gives the place a flat, sprawling feel, and sets the acropolis out above the rest of the city). Today we went to the acropolis and agora, and saw the Parthenon, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the tower of winds, and a bunch of other cool temples and ruins thereof. We also hit up the National Archeological Museum, which was pretty awesome; tons of classical era sculpture, which I really dig. Now we’re at an internet cafe a few blocks from the hotel and we’ve gotta go find a laundromat, since we’re running out of clean clothes.

The connection here is too slow to upload all my pictures, but I’ve selected a few and uploaded those, so take a look. Tommorrow morning at 6:25 am we head to the harbor to catch a ferry to Santorini, where I plan to ride a donkey.

Stay loose.

A Midsommar Night’s Jim Beam

CIMG1303It’s 11am here in Sweden, or around 2am back home, and we’re cleaning up the house at Magnus’ farm… last night was Midsummarafton, which is a big Swedish holiday. It’s to celebrate the start of summer and the longest day of the year. Basically, it involves going out to the country, having a big lunch feast with pickled herring and sour cream (oh joy of joys), and then getting blasted on beer and aquavit (oh joy of joys without the sarcasm). There’s also traditional weaving of flower headbands (which the girls did) and dancing around a flagpole with ribbons (which no one did). Tough but Flowery Then you basically spend the day eating and drinking while it stays light out until 11pm. The country out here is absolutely beautiful, and hanging out with friendly folks, listening to music and getting drunk is pretty close to my idea of a perfect vacation. And don’t get me started on speed croquet… I’m bringing that game back to america, it’s just genius.

Anyways, Sash and I are having a blast so far. Today we’re gonna go watch the World Cup game back in Göteborg (Germany vs. Sweden), and if Sweden wins I’ve been assure it’s going to be insanity in the streets. Then tommorrow, we fly to Athens.

One last thing for those who are interested… while Pitchfork has claimed that Jens Lekman is a pop star here, I have yet to meet a single swede who has heard of him. And I have met a couple who knew The Knife and El Perro Del Mar, so that kind shoots their theory to shit now, doesn’t it?

I Just Skövde Blog About This

CIMG1252Hey there folks… I’m blogging from Skövde, Sweden (pronounced hove-da [think Chanukah for that "h"], hence my awesome pun above), which is just northeast of Göteborg. The trip so far has been pretty slow paced… two long flights followed by a short one, and then a quick nap and a little walk around Göteborg. It’s a pretty city, very green. After touring around the city for a bit, fully zombified by lack of sleep and further weirded out by the sun being out at 10pm, Sash and I crashed and woke up this morning pretty much back on schedule. Magnus drove us up to his dad’s farm in Skövde, and here I sit, drinking Danish beer and preparing to grill up some chow. It’s quite an amazing view out this window, too.

And fear not, faithful readers; I have been snapping pics since our arrival here, and you have but to click on this picture and you shall be blessed with a bounty of eye candy. Enjoy!
