2006 Music Postacular #2: Dirty Pleasures
This category is for albums that came out in 2006 that I’m ashamed to admit I liked. So I’ll list them (again, alphabetically; no need to rank my shame) and explain why I feel dirty just listening to them; something I call the “Dirty Factor”. The list follows the jump… click to keep reading.
In case you missed it, you can view list #1 (which is a list of older albums I discovered this year) here.

DF: DumbElectric SixSwitzerland
This record is (like the other two E6 albums) completely inane: “Slices of you / I’d really like another slice of you / that’s so nice of you / I’d really like another slice of you”. But hey, it totally rocks, and it cracks me up. What more can I say?

DF: Peer PressureThe Hold SteadyBoys and Girls in America
This one is subtle; I didn’t want to put it on my dirty pleasure list, because I really like it. But it’s taken so much crap in the press that I can’t help but feel like I’m doing something naughty just by enjoying it. This record definitely doesn’t have the bite of their old stuff (and it doesn’t come close to approaching the quality of Lifter Puller), but dammit, I like listening to it, and isn’t that all that matters?

DF: So Last DecadeMe First and the Gimme GimmesLove Their Country
I guess I shouldn’t feel bad about listening to new records from bands I loved in high school, but something about it just feels wrong. Either way, I dare you to listen to the version of “Goodbye Earl” on this record and not sing along. And just admit it… you know the words.

DF: CheesyTeddybearsSoft Machine
This record is cheeseball electro-pop, pure and simple. Even worse; it’s mixed in with bits of hip hop and wait for it: reggae. Ugh. So why do I like it? I don’t fucking know… it’s catchy. Leave me alone.

DF: Frat Boy-ishWolfmotherSelf-titled
People often ask my why I hate it when bands get popular. What’s wrong with a band being successful? The answer is multifaceted, but one major problem with popular bands is that going to see a show and being surrounded by total douchebags is simply miserable. There’s a reason I don’t hang out in the marina, and I’d like to be able to go see a band without feeling like I’m in cow hollow. Is that so wrong?
